48.5%   Content Supported more info

Ebook readers can attain content in a variety of ways. Some e-readers are designed with a wireless connection, allowing users to access online e-book stores and download e-books directly onto the e-reader. Other e-readers are equipped with USB and SD connectivity. A USB connection allows the e-reader to connect to the computer through a USB cable. Most e-readers will be recognized by computers as an external hard drive, onto which e-books can be uploaded. An SD card, by contrast, is a memory card that stores e-books. In order to upload e-books onto an SD card, your computer must have an SD slot.

E-books are packaged in many different file formats, and not all e-readers support all formats. Many books are available for free in .txt, .pdf, and .epub formats, and these formats are supported by most e-readers. Books available for purchase at retail sites like Amazon, however, are packaged in specially-developed formats, and are not supported by all e-readers. The number of e-books that are available to read on an e-reader depends largely on the number of formats that are supported by the e-reader. The most popular open formats are PDF and EPUB, both of which are formats available for download from Google Books. Protected formats include AZW, used by Amazon and often DRM-supported, LIT by Microsoft, and BBeB from Sony.

27.3%   Display Type and Quality more info

The primary function of an ebook reader is to provide a comfortable way for people to read electronic books and documents. To achieve a comfortable reading experience, many readers utilize electronic paper, or e-ink technology, to imitate a flat, paper-like appearance to the display. The focus on reading and the distinguishes e-readers from other hand-held computing devices, such as PDAs, phones, and digital music players, though many ebook readers include the capacity to take notes, maintain calendars, connect to the internet, and listen to audio.

12.1%   Connectivity more info

An e-reader's connectivity indicates the ways it connects with the outside world to download e-books and other content. Some e-readers act only as a hard drive, and connect to a computer through a USB cable. Other e-readers use SD card storage. The most advanced e-readers connect directly to online stores through a WiFi or 3G connection. An e-reader with internet connectivity through WiFi or a 3G network can be a hundred dollars or more than the same model without wireless.

4.0%   Internet Connectivity more info

Some e-readers are equipped with either WiFi or the capacity to connect to a 3G network, in order to download books and surf reading material, such as newspapers and blogs, on the internet. While WiFi is limited to areas where a wireless network is available, a 3G network operates as a telephone network and has a wider range. However, some 3G connectivity demands a contract and will also increase the cost of the e-reader more significantly.

E-reader battery life can vary greatly, and depends largely on whether the e-reader is built with wireless internet capacity and audio. Modest e-readers can last for weeks without needing to be re-charged, while flashier e-readers may only last a few days. Where battery life information was in varied units of measurement, it was converted using these approximated formulae : 1min = 1page, 300pages = 1day, 5 hours = 1day.
